Final Project for Ecology Center Unit

Hey All,

Below are the details (same as the handout) for the final project. The group presentation will happen in the near future, but make sure that the 1st and 3rd sections are handed in by THE END OF THE DAY, TUESDAY, MARCH 25TH.

Final project for Ecology Center Interdisciplinary Unit

Due no later than Tuesday, March 25th. Please develop a final project that meets the following requirements in a very detailed and descriptive way. Please type the Individual Reflection and Self and Peer Assessment and staple them into your journal.

Individual Reflection
Please describe what tasks you engaged in. For each component, please explain the following:
• What you accomplished as a group (if it was a group effort)
• What you individually contributed to the project
• What you learned along the way academically and otherwise
• How it addresses humans’ place in the ecosystem
• How the school and community will benefit from the project that you worked on.

Collaborative Presentation
Develop a presentation on your piece(s) of the Ecology Center. You should be able to:
• Articulate the hands-on work and research that your team did
• Explain the information that is presented in your display and why that information is important
• Describe what learning opportunities for others result from your work
• Identify additional or incomplete pieces that still need to be developed.

Self and Peer Assessment
• Identify approaches that your team took that worked well.
• Identify approaches that your team took that could have been improved.
• What is one thing that you did well?
• What is one thing that you could have done better?
• What is one thing each of your teammates did well?
• What is one thing each of your teammates could have done better?

Oh it's been too long!

Hi All,

Sorry that it has been too long between posts. A lot of good work is being done to develop the Ecology Lab and Eco Deck. Special thanks to Phillip Alvelda, who has contributed his time and vision to helping us make the facility an excellent and inspiring place to do science. Groups have been working on botany, renewable energy, critters (lab animals), developing the BMS Ecology Board, setting up new lab computers, creating a mural, and installing a weather station.

Make sure your journal is up to date.

Tuesday night's homework (for Wednesday 3/12):
1. Develop your proposal for work and educational opportunities related to your piece of the ecocenter.
2. Reflect on: what you accomplished today in class.
3. Reflect on: what you learned today
4. Reflect on: what your next steps are in your project.

Wednesday night's homework (for Thursday 3/13)
1. Reflect on: what you accomplished today in class.
2. Reflect on: what you learned today
3. Reflect on: what your next steps are in your project.

Weekend's homework (for Tuesday 3/18)
1. Reflect on: what you have accomplished in the first two weeks (can include what you've learned).
2. Reflect on: what your realistic goals are for the last week of the unit.

Have a good weekend!

Laying the Groundwork

Great start to the Ecology Center interdisciplinary unit. The last two days in review:
Monday:
1. Created our journals.
2. Cleaned out the EcoLab (indoor) space.
3. Visited the Vivarium to generate ideas and gather data on expanding our critter collection.

Tuesday:
1. Reflected on Monday's start.
2. Reviewed the concepts of ecology, ecosystems, and our place in the ecosystem.
3. In the context of how we affect, and are affected by the ecosystem (environment), we worked in small groups to brainstorm the components that we will be developing in the Ecology Center over the next three weeks.

YOUR HOMEWORK FOR CLASS ON THURSDAY, MARCH 6:
Identify your TOP THREE choices of the stations that we brainstormed about in class today. I will do my best to link you with your preferences, although we will be rotating through at least two of these over the next couple of weeks. Your choices:

Indoor Displays
1. Animals (critters)
2. Weather Station
3. Renewable (Solar) Energy at BMS
4. The 4 R's - Waste at BMS
5. Strawberry Creek Watershed
6. Honeybees and Pollinators

Outdoor Displays
7. EcoDeck Planting
8. Chickens
9. EcoMural
10. EcoBoard (BMS entryway)

We will figure out how to delegate tasks and responsibilities in class tomorrow. Keep up the great work!
